With her ukulele and sweet voice, 13-year-old Sage makes beautiful music. For Sage, like many musicians, playing music is a feeling like no other. It sparks her imagination, warms her heart and soothes her soul.
On her musical journey, however, Sage has faced obstacles no child should have to endure. Following her 12th birthday, Sage was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer after doctors found a mass in her ribcage, which forced her to undergo surgery and chemotherapy.
"I think the scariest part was she dropped 30 pounds almost instantly because she couldn't eat," recalled Sage's mom.
During this trying time, Make-A-Wish® and Subaru of America Inc. rallied together to help Sage determine her one true wish. For every child and family on the journey to health, a wish serves as a catalyst for renewed strength and joy. When a wish comes true, it creates hope and transformation.
Aside from her music interests, Sage loves the mountains and has always wanted to snowboard. For her wish, she chose to visit one of the top snowboarding destinations in the United States.
"My wish was to go to Jackson Hole, Wyoming," Sage said. "I heard that there was the best snowboarding in the country there. I was so excited to get my wish … nobody's telling me to go get blood work or go get a scan right now."
Snowboarding amid the pretty scenery and fresh air of the mountains gave Sage and her family hope and the ability to experience life beyond illness. They were also treated to an extra-special surprise, courtesy of Subaru. Sage was offered the opportunity to star in Subaru's Share The Love® commercial spot, during which she would show off her ukulele and singing talents in front of a national audience.
"Subaru treated us like a royal family. We were so well taken care of," said Sage's mom. "The energy, the love and the compassion that we felt from the team there was just spectacular. And they took care of Sage. She just lit up."
Sage’s wish to go snowboarding in Jackson Hole – and her role in the Subaru commercial – created a life-changing moment for her and her family. These experiences helped them find strength and cope, and today, Sage is cancer-free. Thanks to Subaru, Sage will be able to visit the snow and sing her songs for many years to come.
"I'm so grateful for Subaru for making my wish come true," Sage said. "They're just unbelievable there. I love them."
